At the Georgetown Drive-in Theater, you can indulge in nostalgia for yesteryear without giving up on up-to-the-minute films. The grass-covered drive-in, located just 13 miles west of downtown Louisville, does evoke a sense of nostalgia. Although you can listen to the movie over your car’s FM radio, you can still relive the good ol’ days by using drive-in window speakers. A playground with swings and giant inflatable slides keep the tots happy until the movie begins at nightfall. Although the merry-go-round was replaced with the inflatable slides in recent years, not much else has changed since the Georgetown Drive-in Theater opened in 1951.
But you won’t have to face grainy black-and-white zombie films here. The drive-in boasts two screens, each playing at least two — and sometimes three — new releases nightly, making the theater a great value for $9. (That’s $5 for children 5 to 11 and free for those 4 and younger!) But be sure to bring cash; the Georgetown Drive-in won’t take credit cards or anything else.
Be sure to arrive early, especially on weekends; the Georgetown’s lot, though large, fills up quickly. Sometimes, so many people head to the drive-in that the management is forced to turn some cars away. You won’t want that to happen to you!
The theater closes from November to mid-April. When it first reopens for the season, the Georgetown Drive-in shows movies on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. The theater switches to daily shows in early June each year.
Like any old-time drive-in, the Georgetown Drive-in has a concession stand plying hotdogs, chili dogs, popcorn, soft drinks, candy, ice cream and a few more items. Another new addition is an arcade where you can play video games and pinball machines while awaiting for sundown and the start of the movie.
