Tour of Harrison County Wineries Will Prove Fruitful

You don’t have to travel to California or Upstate New York to visit wine country: less than an hour from Louisville, five Harrison County wineries produce a wide assortment of wines, some of them award-winning.

Turtle Run Winery
The oldest — and, at more than 11 acres, the largest — of the wineries in Harrison County is Turtle Run Winery, located at 940 St. Peters Church Road N.E. in Corydon since 1996. You can witness the pressing of the grapes, the filling of the giant oak barrels, the blending and filtering of the wines and wine bottling. You can also participate in wine-tasting events year round or visit Turtle Run’s gift shop.

Indian Creek Winery
Indian Creek Winery,  just 25 minutes away from Louisville at 6491 County Line Road in Georgetown, Ind., is the closest to the Derby City. This small farm winery provides private tastings on request, as well as hosting free wine-tasting events so visitors can sample the fine wines from its four acres. In addition to grape table wines, Indian Creek also bottles blackberry and strawberry wines.

Best Vineyard
Best Vineyard, located at 8373 Morgans Lane S.E. in Elizabeth, Ind., has been producing wine commercially just since 2008. The vineyard has begun selling mango, peach and sweet blackberry wines as well as an eclectic assortment of dry and sweet wines. Best Vineyards also has wine-tasting events.

Scout Mountain Winery
Scout Mountain Winery, located at 2145 Scout Mountain Road and surrounded by forest in Corydon, opened in 2009. Its Red Tail Hawk, a fruity red wine, has already won a gold medal and Best of Show designation at the Story Inn Festival in neighboring Brown County. In addition to selling its wines, Scout Mountain Winery rents out the Scout Mountain Hideaway, a secluded home that accommodates six adults.

Grateful Goat Vineyard & Winery
Grateful Goat Vineyard & Winery, located at 1404 W. Palmyra Lake Road in Palmyra, Ind., is the newest Harrison County winery. At present, Grateful Goat has three wines under cultivation. Grateful Goat has free wine tastings, but the winery sells other items, including Arkansas quartz, in its gift shop.
