More About Jeffersonville, Indiana

ille Indiana is the largest inland ship builder in the country. Not many people outside of the area know that. Jeffersonville is located directly across the Ohio River from Louisville Kentucky. Settlement began in the Jeffersonville area around 1786. Jeffersonville’s primary growth in the 1800’s came from the steamboat industry. The Howard Ships Yards first built vessels for nearly a century. The ship yard is now called Jeff Boat. Jeff Boat is still helping drive the local economy making barges to roam the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. You can take a tour of the Howard Steamboat Museum, which is housed in the original Howard home, located across the street from the ship yard.

Visit Schimpff's Confectionery which has been making fine handmade candies in Jeffersonville since 1891. They were recently named one of Indiana’s seven hidden treasures. Just a mile down the river is the Falls of the Ohio State Park which boasts one of the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. A side trip to “Jeff” when in the Louisville area would be a lot of fun.
