In a discreet building on Charlestown Road is the Onion Restaurant and Tea House, one of the best Chinese restaurants in Kentuckiana.
Unfortunately, dining at a new Chinese restaurant is always a gamble. Many local Chinese restaurants serve meals composed of low-quality ingredients, and by the time you realize it, it's too late. You're paying for your meal whether you like it or not. Fortunately, dining at Onion Restaurant and Tea House is never a gamble. The Onion uses the same ingredients you would use if you were preparing your meal at home.
The Onion's best deals are served at lunch where you get a bowl of soup, an eggroll, an entree of your choice, and white rice for only $5.95. Entrees that appear on the lunch special menu include Mongolian beef, war su gai, and chicken with vegetables like baby corn, bamboo shoots, broccoli, water chestnuts, and snow peas.
Dinner entrees at the Onion feature larger portions and higher prices. Unless you're starving or wanting to take home leftovers, dinner entrees are best shared with a friend. Instead of two entrees, split an entree and replace its cost with two bowls of egg drop soup, a couple of egg rolls, and an order of crab rangoon. You'll have plenty of food, and you'll get to sample a wider variety of items.
The food is just one highlight at Onion Restaurant and Tea House; the restaurant also boasts consistently friendly and fast service. Even on weekends, there is rarely a wait, though the restaurant from both inside and out looks as though the seating is minimal. You'll never find yourself looking at your watch while waiting for one of your courses because it will arrive quicker than you expected, and it will be hot and fresh.
