Because of Horseshoe Southern Indiana's aggressive marketing campaign, most Louisvillians have heard of the Paula Deen buffet in Indiana. But, in a land where buffets are on just about every corner, is the Paula Deen buffet in Indiana really so amazing and worth the half-hour drive? The answer is a resounding, “Yes!”
While Paula Deen has only recently come onto the national cooking scene with her popular show on the Food Network, she has been a celebrity chef in Savannah for years. Her restaurant, Lady & Sons, typically has a huge line snaking around the block, and the wait is long. So Louisville is lucky to be able to enjoy Deen’s down-home cooking with very little wait at all.
The first thing you notice when you walk into the buffet is the enticing aromas, which probably draw in as many diners as the restaurant’s famous namesake. The buffet serves up several of Deen’s specialties straight from her Savannah restaurant. Enjoy her famous The Lady’s Mac & Cheese, as well as fried green tomatoes, hot cakes with whipped honey butter, chicken fried steak and pulled pork, as well as two carving stations.
Of course, there’s an extensive salad bar serving up some of her veggie specialties, but the main dishes are the stars. On Friday and Saturday nights, the buffet features some of her coastal favorites in a scrumptious seafood buffet, offering up a variety of fresh fish dishes including stuffed flounder, a delicious low-country seafood boil, oysters, seafood dip and hushpuppies.
For dessert, sample Deen’s red velvet cupcakes, “Gooey Butter Cakes,” and an assortment of ice creams, tarts and other bite-sized treats. Make sure to plan time for a stop in Paula Deen’s Gift Shop, where you can find cook books, cookware and lots of little kitchen knick knacks from Paula’s Food Network show and Savannah restaurants.
